At Church Pharmacy, we’re committed to keeping you healthy and informed. Here are answers to some common questions about flu jab and the side effects:

Can I have an allergic reaction to the flu jab?

While allergic reactions are rare, they can occur. If you have a history of severe allergies, especially to eggs or any vaccine components, please inform our pharmacist before getting your jab. We’re prepared to handle allergic reactions in the unlikely event they occur.

What are the most common side effects?

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. You might experience:

  • Soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Mild headache
  • Low-grade fever
  • Muscle aches

These typically resolve within a day or two and are signs that your body is building protection against the flu.

Can the flu jab give me the flu?

No, the flu jab cannot give you the flu. The vaccine contains inactivated virus or only a single gene from the flu virus, which cannot cause infection. If you feel under the weather after the jab, it’s likely your immune system responding to the vaccine.

How long do side effects last?

Most people find that side effects clear up within 1-2 days. If you’re concerned about prolonged symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact us for advice.

Are there any serious side effects I should watch for?

Serious side effects are extremely rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face or throat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Dizziness or weakness

Can I take painkillers to manage side effects?

Yes, if needed, you can take over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen to manage discomfort. Our pharmacists can advise on the most suitable option for you.

Is it normal to feel tired after getting the flu jab?

Mild fatigue is a common and normal response. It usually passes quickly, but make sure to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated.

Can I get the flu jab if I’m sick?

If you have a mild illness, such as a cold, you can usually still get the flu jab. However, if you have a moderate to severe illness with a fever, it’s best to wait until you’ve recovered. This is for two reasons:

  • Your body needs energy to build immunity after the vaccine. If you’re fighting off another illness, the vaccine may not be as effective.
  • If you have a fever, it can be difficult to distinguish between side effects from the vaccine and symptoms of your current illness.

If you’re unsure, our pharmacists can assess your condition and advise whether it’s appropriate to proceed with the vaccination or reschedule for when you’re feeling better.

Remember, the benefits of flu vaccination far outweigh the risk of side effects. If you have any other questions or concerns, our friendly team at Church Pharmacy is always here to help. Your health and peace of mind are our top priorities.
